Drea Cohane / Simone Says

Drea Cohane / Simone Says

Drea Cohane is a visual artist who lives and works from the city of Kitchener-Waterloo. Due to a brain injury, Drea was inspired to take up art as a means of building new neural pathways. What started out as an effort to enhance brain plasticity, has now become a lifelong creative endeavour.

Drea is fascinated by human nature; more specifically, by the interior lives we carry within us. These enigmatic inner landscapes are mostly kept hidden from a passerby, but will sometimes, and often fleetingly, reveal themselves in a passing gesture or look. In her portraits, Drea looks to capture a quality or expression through the use of colour and contour that distills something of the interior life of a person. Whether it's just a mere glimpse of what's going on under the surface, there is always an urgent sense of a passing mood playing out before the viewer.

"When I received Arlina Cai's work in my inbox, I must confess, at first glance, my mind went blank. But as I sat and stared at her painting, the soft contours of the belly reminded me of a passage from Simone De Beauvoir's Second Sex, where she refers to the female belly as a 'tender and elastic ocean, whence all life is piercing' and for me this painting embodies that passage. And naturally, my brain went to Simone De Beauvoir herself, and in my mind it is her belly button in Arlina Cai's work and I have given a face to the body. I wanted to make a direct link between the torso and the face, by incorporating the same soft peaches and pinks that Arlina used in her painting into mine - as well as that gorgeous green hue that I think centers both of our works."  — Drea Cohane

This piece is presented as part of our International Women's Day Exhibition, After You: The Broken Telephone Collection, from March 6th - 8th and will be shipped following the show. Over a year in the making, the Broken Telephone Collection began with one artist working from a reference photograph; each subsequent artist creates a piece inspired by the one before her, and so on, and so forth.

Each acquisition from this collection will include a complimentary 11" x 8.5" print of the reference piece that precedes it. The inspiration piece for this artwork is Arlina Cai, Wisdom Only Your Body Knows. Please note, all artworks will be shipped after the exhibition has concluded.
